The Report
Technically a patty melt, which is to say a burger on rye. We are counting it. A thin griddled patty, Swiss, deeply caramelized onions, and buttered rye pressed flat on the griddle.
The onions are the best part: cooked low and long, almost jammy. The patty is thinner than we would like and gets a little lost between the bread and cheese. Rye is the right choice and is toasted evenly, but it pushes the whole thing toward sandwich territory. Execution is clean, and the cheese melts all the way to the edges.
$13.50 at a diner counter near Eastern Market, with a pickle spear and coffee refills. It is a strong weekend lunch and a reliable morning-after order. Come back for it on a cold Saturday.
