The Report
A classic smash done the way the format intends: two patties, two slices of American, shredded lettuce, pickles, and house sauce. It comes in a paper sleeve and lands two-tenths of a point short of the top tier.
The crust is the story. Hard sear, deep brown, edges you can hear. Seasoning is assertive without tipping into salty. The sauce is tangy and used with restraint, and the lettuce adds crunch rather than water. The bun is a soft, slightly sweet roll that does its job and stays out of the way. One note on execution: the second patty ran thin on our visit.
At $11 it is one of the better values on the Board, and it stays open late on weekends, which makes it a strong call after a show on U Street. Worth crossing town for. Bring someone who also orders fries.
